Appointments

We offer the following types of appointments:

Urgent: Please tell us if you feel that you need an appointment urgently. We’ll review your request carefully. Where appropriate, we’ll offer you an appointment on the same working day, or the next day. If we think you need immediate help, we may tell you to go to a hospital. When the surgery is closed, please call 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk.

Routine: If you don’t need immediate help, please let us know when you request an appointment. Where appropriate, we’ll arrange an appointment for you in the next two weeks.

Evening and weekend appointments: We provide evening and weekend appointments outside of our normal opening hours.

Home visits: Please let us know if you cannot leave your home because you are housebound. Please request a home visit as soon as possible in the morning.

Urgent appointments

This would be for unforeseen, non-life-threatening issues needing prompt attention, like sudden infections (UTIs, chest), severe pain (stomach, ear or severe headache), worsening conditions (worrying rashes, fevers), or acute mental health crises, that can’t wait for an non-urgent slot but don’t require A&E (999).

Think things that might get significantly worse if delayed, such as breathing issues, severe headaches, acute dizziness or infections needing quick antibiotics.

Common Reasons for Urgent GP Slots

Infections: Chest, sinus, urinary tract (UTI), skin infections like cellulitis although consider pharmacy first for sinus and UTI (women 16-64 years).

Pain/Discomfort: Acute stomach pain, severe headaches, acute dizziness, earaches.

Respiratory: Sudden breathing problems, severe coughs.

Skin: Sudden severe rashes, allergic reactions.

Mental Health: Acute distress or urgent concerns.

Fever: High temperature, especially with confusion or stiff neck.

Injuries: Minor cuts needing stitches, sprains, suspected fractures (please present to the urgent treatment centre).

Training Practice

Ifield Medical Practice has been approved for GP and medical student training. Each year one or more fully qualified doctors with hospital experience may spend time with the practice. This is part of their training to become GPs.

Occasionally, medical students may also spend time with the Practice. All of our trainees and students work closely with our GP partners. Sometimes other doctors who oversee training standards visit the surgery. They inspect patient medical records during these visits to check training standards. Please tell reception if you do not want your medical records included.
